This stark film shows the moral rot of Stalin�s Russia from the inside. Set in 1937, there is no violence, only the inexorable, toad-like creep of totalitarianism as a fresh young civil prosecutor is suffocated by red tape and bureaucracy after he decides to represent an abused Gulag prisoner.
