We're delighted to once again be screening films as part of the Purbeck Film Festival.
Nominated for the Palme d’Or and multiple winner of the 2023 Nastro d’Argento awards, is the harrowing story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy living in Bologna, Italy, in 1858. After being secretly baptized, he was forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. Edgardo’s parents, distraught, will do anything to get their son back. The storyline is an intense depiction, not only of their struggle but of the larger political battle that pitted the papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification at that time. This rich, operatic film is based on indefensible truths. It is an important historical document which tackles the incomprehensibility of institutional abuse which sadly continues to have relevance today.
